Initial Hold & First Thanks

You are inside the elevator, see someone approaching, and press the 'door open' button. The person sees you holding it and offers a quick 'thanks'.

Approaching & Requesting Hold

You are rushing towards the elevator, and someone inside notices you and holds the door. You might say 'Can you hold that?' or just 'Thanks!' as you approach.

Acknowledging & Entering

You are the person being waited for. After someone holds the door, you quickly step in, offering a more immediate or slightly more elaborate 'thank you' upon entering.

Holding for Multiple People

You hold the elevator door for one person, and then realize there are more people behind them also coming. You continue to hold the door, and multiple 'thank yous' might be exchanged.

Polite Exchange & Closing Door

After the person or people have entered, you release the button. There might be a final 'You're welcome' or a nod before the doors close and the elevator starts moving.
